Overfitting

von

The festival is over, I am driving back with the company car I had at that time. I take F. and N. with me. N. takes a nap on the backseat and F. and I listen to music and chat about the festival, the DJs and music in general.
F. tells me that the “famous” DJs on that festival have a blog where they post music.

Later at home, I check the blog. Fantastic! So much music to discover. Their design of the website looks fancy and each post comes with a quirky note. The blog has been running since 2007.

I start following them on facebook and the blog becomes an encyclopedia for disco music.

A year later I will ask myself what the name actually stands for. Turns out, it is a mathematic model.

An overfitted model is a mathematical model that contains more parameters than can be justified by the data.[2] The essence of overfitting is to have unknowingly extracted some of the residual variation (i.e., the noise) as if that variation represented underlying model structure.

Overfitting is a particular situation in the use of artificial intelligence where a correction of a model on a certain given data set is referred to. Statistically, too many explanatory variables are used to specify a model. Thus, overfitting can be compared to a human hallucination, where things are seen that are not actually there.

Great!
No, not great at all. Does that mean that these people are very aware of what they are doing and are capable of methods an innocent woman who believes in magic would never ever have thought actually exist?
Are they the new ministry of truth?
